A group is raising funds to get Wildrose leader Brian Jean into the premier’s office.
‘Jean for Premier’ is a fundraising project of Alberta Fund – the project launched last year by former Wildrose president David Yager.
Yager said by the time the next provincial election rolls around, Alberta needs someone who can effectively restructure how the province operates.
“I think Brian has more skill in that area than Mr. Kenney,” Yager said. “Now whether that translates to the vote, hey I was wrong in 2014 I could be wrong again.”
The campaign is not unlike the “Unite Alberta” non-profit which bankrolled Jason Kenney’s bid for the PC leadership.
Yager said he thinks Kenney might be right for the Tories, but not to lead the province.
“I think it’s really important that he win the PC leadership,” Yager explained. “But I don’t know that that’s necessarily going to translate if they merge the parties.”
Yager said he hopes like-minded people will join him in backing Brian Jean.
“It’s really a fan club where we can raise capital,” Yager said. “And if and when a race emerges we can support our candidate.”
The non-profit allows people to donate to a campaign like Jean’s, in spite of donation caps instituted by the Notley government. With files from Newstalk770 / John Himpe
