The Edmonton Oilers start a five game road trip in Toronto tonight against the Maple Leafs.
It’ll be the first time that Connor McDavid will play in his home town of Toronto.
“It means a lot,” says McDavid. “I’ve actually played in this building a lot but never against the Leafs and never wearing the Oilers logo. I’m excited to play in front of a bunch of family and friends. It’s going to be a special night for me.”
It’s also the first ever match up between Connor McDavid and Auston Matthews.
“He’s such a good player. He’s quick, has a lot of skill, and a good shot,” says McDavid. “I’m excited to play against him.”
The game is generating a ton of buzz. So much so that Wayne Gretzky, Paul Coffey, Bobby Orr and a number of other NHL legends will be in attendance.
“That’s why I flew in for the game,” says Gretzky. “All eyes will be on those two kids. From my perspective, the best athletes want to be in those positions.”
Amidst all the hoopla, McDavid was named the NHL’s First Star for the month for October. McDavid registered 5 goals and 7 assists in 9 games.
The Oilers will make one lineup change. Defenceman Matthew Benning draws in for Eric Gryba. It will be Benning’s first NHL game. Game time tonight is 5:30pm. You can hear it live on 630ched starting with the faceoff show at 4:00pm.
