The new ‘C’ on Connor McDavid’s jersey certainly didn’t weigh him down.
The Oilers captain scored twice as Edmonton dumped the Winnipeg Jets 5-2 Thursday night at Rogers Place.
McDavid created several chances in the early going and opened the scoring on the power play just 5:16 into the game.
Patrick Maroon extended the lead to 2-0 with another power play marker 7:07 into the second frame. The Jets got a goal from Brandon Tanev four minutes later and were applying pressure heading to the third.
Winnipeg had a chance to pull even on a power play early in the third, but McDavid and Mark Letestu scored shorthanded goals 1:01 apart to stretch the Oilers lead to 4-1.
Tyler Pitlick and Bryan Little rounded out the scoring.
Jonas Gustavsson earned the win in net, making 22 saves on 23 shots. Cam Talbot briefly played net for Edmonton in the second period when Gustavsson had an equipment problem. Talbot was beaten on the only shot he faced.
Drake Caggiula was stopped on a penalty shot in the second period and left the game with an injury shortly after. It was Caggiula’s second penalty shot of the pre-season. He also failed to score last Monday against Calgary.
Oilers head coach Todd McLellan left the bench for the last few minutes of the second period after being hit by a puck. He returned for the third.
The Oilers are 5-2 in the pre-season and will host Vancouver Saturday night. (jrw)
