The Eskimos visit the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Friday night at Investors Group Field and will be without a player who has been a strong contributor to their offense.
Running back Shakir Bell was the projected starter for Friday but an injury sustained during practice on Wednesday will force John White into the role of the Eskimos featured back. Bell started the last two games for the Eskimos and has averaged 111 yards rushing in three total starts this season. John White returned to practice this week after missing two games with a shoulder injury.
Head coach Jason Maas is confident that White will perform well on Friday.
“John’s ready to roll and we’ll be fine,” Maas said. “John is a heck of a runner in his own right. He blocks extremely well and his protection is outstanding so that will help us going against these guys. He catches the ball extremely well out of the backfield.”
White hasn’t put the type of numbers from his 2014 campaign, He’s sixth in the CFL in rushing with 429 yards and three touchdowns. Quarterback Mike Reilly says the offense is comfortable having either back in their backfield.
It’s the third meeting of the season between the two teams. The Eskimos currently are holding the crossover playoff spot in the Eastern Division. They are four points back of the Bombers in the Western Division and a win would give the Eskimos the season series and the advantage in tie-breaker scenarios.
Kick-off Friday from Investors Group Field in Winnipeg is 6:30pm. You can hear the game on CISN Country One-oh-Three-point-Nine FM starting with the pre-game show at 5:30pm
