An Edmonton man recently discovered his backyard had a deep secret.
Brian Day has lived in his home for 25 years, and over the last few weeks noticed what he thought was a sinkhole developing in his yard.
However, it turned out to be a 15-metre deep well from 1928.
Day tells Global News that at first he planned to just fill it in.
“(When) I looked underneath the sod, I expected to see dirt” explains Day. “But, I saw dark. A real dark, dark.”
Day adds it’s something that could’ve caused injury over the 25 years he’s lived at that house.
“Literally what was only holding this up,” says Day. “Was 35 years or 38 years of grass roots that were intertwined.”
Day says he’s now trying to raise awareness for other homeowners who may have a similar situation.
“You can take a look at where all the wells are in Alberta,” says Day. “(And) there are literally hundreds of thousands of them. Quite a few of them I think have been abandoned, like ours. (And) not back filled.”
Day says this incident was particularly frightening because at any point in the last 25 years, someone could have fallen down the hole.
The well was filled in with concrete this afternoon. (km/Global News)
