Edmontonians are breaking out their summer dresses, suits, and fancy hats for Saturday’s running of the Canadian Derby.
It’s the 87th running of the race, and the purse is $150,000.
Northlands Track Announcer Matt Jukich tells the Alberta Morning News there are horses coming from all over to compete.
“We’ve got horses coming up from California, we’ve got horses from Hastings, we’ve got horses who were at Emerald Downs earlier this year, then Grande Prairie.” says Jukich. “This kind of spans North America.”
The favourite to win is three-year-old Thoroughbred Ready Intalglio, but Jukich says it’s a pretty even field.
“In previous years we’ve seen some standout horses come out and compete.” Jukich says. “We have a quality of a lot of horses. We have a race where any one of the twelve can win.”
Between Saturday’s Thoroughbred races, Gord Bamford will also perform. The Derby itself goes at 7:45pm, with a post-race concert by Paul Brandt. (ms, Alberta Morning News)
