Canada’s Penny Oleksiak made history in the pool Thursday. The 16-year-old won her fourth Olympic medal winning gold in the 100-metre freestyle final. This medal makes her the most decorated Canadian swimmer at a single Olympics. The first time Olympian already has a silver in the 100-metre fly and two bronze relays.
Saskatchewan native Graham DeLaet shot an opening round 66 to finish five under par at the Olympic Games in Rio. DeLaet currently sits in 2nd place with three rounds to play. This is golf’s 1st appearance at the Olympics since 1904.
Canada still has a chance to clinch a medal in tennis, but the dreams of a gold were dashed Thursday. Daniel Nestor and Vasek Pospisil fell to Spain’s Rafael Nadal and Marc Lopez 7-6, 7-6 in the men’s doubles tennis semifinals. The duo faces Jack Sock and Steve Johnson of the United States for the bronze Friday.
Canada currently has a gold, a silver and five bronze medals and is sitting in 20th place overall. (kb/bu)
