Two Edmonton sisters were on a year-long trip when on June 8th they were running some errands in Lima, Peru.
Alice and Samantha Sech had the right of way as they began crossing a street, that’s when a bus came barreling around the corner, running down 19 year old Samantha, pulling her leg under the wheel and coming to a stop with her below the tires.
“The worst pain of my life. It was a pain that I couldn’t even describe to you, I could only scream.”
That pain was compounded when she later discovered that her travelers insurance had expired, and that she was now responsible for more than $107 thousand in medical bills and emergency travel.
“This was very upsetting because we were under the impression that it would cover me until I got home.”
Samantha continues to recover in the Royal Alex.
She tells 63CHED News that she leveraged that insurance earlier in her trip for treatment for altitude sickness, but due to either a miscommunication or a misunderstanding, the insurance had lapsed.
A Go Fund Me page has been open for 22 days now and has since raised more than $22 thousand.
“It just makes me feel so hopeful and so grateful because if it wouldn’t be for these people my life would be potentially so different; I would be under crippling debt.”
There’s still a long way to go to hit their $107.2 thousand goal. You can visit the page and maybe even make a donation to help out your young neighbor by clicking right here.
