The city wants to add a second parking area at Terwillegar Park. However it’s not forging ahead with it just yet. It’s doing a survey to get your input.
The off leash area at Terwillegar Park is so over run, they’re looking to add 112 new spaces on a gravel lot, west of the one that’s there now.
“Users of the park are finding that the existing parking lot down there is inadequate and what was happening was we were getting a lot of people who were starting to park illegally because there was no room down there,” said planner Rob Marchak with urban initiatives for the city.
“We’re not quite doubling the size of what’s down there right now but we’re kind of tidying it up a little bit and creating the additional spots,” Marchuk said. Last winter, when the ground was frozen they put in a temporary lot with 75 spots. “A lot of times we maximized that out.”
“We do get people from across the city who actually use this because it’s seen as such a desirable area. It’s really responding to a regional use more than just the immediate neighborhood. That’s what we find even with Hawrelak Park, you get people from across the city to use it. It’s very much the same way down here.”
“We’re hoping to get it built before winter. We’ve got some tight timelines here but we see this as one of the desirable things to get it moving along in response to what began as citizen complaints about a year ago in terms of the lack of parking down in that area.”
As well as the survey, which you can find here then following the links, the city is also doing environmental studies.
The survey will run for the next couple of weeks until July 17. On Saturday July 16, city staff will also be in the park with the questionnaire.
