Training camp is now in the rear view mirror and the Eskimos practiced today for the first time today preparing for an opponent. The Ottawa REDBLACKS visit The Brick Field at Commonwealth Stadium on Saturday afternoon in the season opener for both teams.
These two teams met in the 2015 Grey Cup Game in Winnipeg where the Eskimos won their 14th Grey Cup Championship with a 26-20 win over the REDBLACKS. Before the game on Saturday the Eskimos will unveil the 2015 Grey Cup banner. Quarterback Mike Reilly says the honour will be nice but so will be putting 2015 behind them and focusing on the 2016 CFL season.
Saturday will be the first time Eskimos head coach and offensive coordinator Jason Maas faces the REDBLACKS where he served as their offensive coordinator last season. He helped quarterback Henry Burris win the CFL Most Outstanding Player award. The REDBLACKS also had four receivers go over the 1,000 yard mark. Maas knows Ottawa very well which helps considering the film from the pre-season is not the best to look at.
Good news on the injury front as defensive back Marcell Young returned to practice after missing most of last week’s training camp sessions and the final pre-season game against the Saskatchewan Roughriders. The Eskimos have placed offensive lineman Danny Groulx on the one-game injured list while linebacker Adam Konar has been placed on the six game injured list.
Kick-off Saturday on The Brick Field at Commonwealth Stadium is 5pm. 630 CHED will have the pre-game show at 3:30pm.
