A perfect preseason has set the Eskimos up for the start of the regular season in one week.
The Eskimos made a statement early and took control of the game early in a 25-11 win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders. After winning the coin toss, the Eskimos elected to take the ball and three players later former Rider Chris Getzlaf had it in the end zone and the Eskimos had a 7-0 lead before many of the over 29 thousand had settled in their seats. The big play of the drive was a 59 yard pass and run to Derel Walker on the first play of the game from scrimmage.
“Start aggressive, start fast and finish” said head coach Jason Maas post game. “That will be our mantra this year”
The other TD came on the most electrifying play of the game, an 85 yard run to the end zone by running back Joe McKnight, who finished the game with 123 yards rushing. Sean Whyte went 3 for 4 on field goals.
The Eskimos finish the preseason at 2 and 0, the Riders finish at 0 and 2.
Next up for the Eskimos – cut down day. They will trim the roster to 46 players plus the injured and the practice roster by 10 am tomorrow morning.
Running back Akeem Shavers left the game early with what looked like an arm injury, linebacker Jimmy Gaines also left early with an injury.
Quarterback James Franklin was slated to play the 3rd quarter of the game but did not play at all. Maas said post game the reason was an illness. Franklin was on the sidelines for the game but unable to go.
Ottawa is here is on Saturday to begin the regular season with a Grey Cup rematch. Game time is 5 PM, the pregame show on 630 CHED is at 330.
