The Government of Alberta has released satellite images that residents can use to survey the damage done to Fort McMurray.
However, Municipal Affairs Minister Danielle Larivee warns any residents that the images may be traumatic.
“Having been through a devastating fire and evacuation myself, I know firsthand how stressful it is to wait for updates on which homes have been lost,” she said in a release. “We are committed to providing information to residents as soon as we can, and these images will help us begin to answer the questions people have about the state of their homes and community.”
The current satellite images only show the most damaged areas, and Larivee says that even if a structure looks undamaged that may not be the case.
She also says higher resolution photos should be released in the next few days, and those should help property owners to better assess insurance claims, and recovery eligibility funding.
