B.C. NDP leader John Horgan says if elected in May, an NDP government would invest $500,000 a year in Surrey’s Wraparound program to address gang violence in the city.
The Surrey school district and RCMP mentor kids through the program to stay in school and away from gang life
“We have to get, apply annually through the civil forfeiture program to get one-time grants. We want to make it a secure, stable, on-going program,” says Horgan, adding that the B.C. Liberals have neglected the program.
“…they boosted it one time only, at the height of the crisis a year ago and have neglected it ever since.”
Horgan says at one point there were 40 kids in the Surrey School District waiting to get into the program.
He says on average there’s been one shooting a month in Surrey for the past two years.
