A north east Edmonton man has described the discovery of a severed human head that was found Wednesday morning in an alley way south of 132 avenue and 72 street.

The alley is tucked in behind older bungalows and a small strip mall.

Jesse Whitnack, who lives in an apartment in the area, said he got up for a smoke at 7:30am, and was watching from his balcony when police arrived.

"I saw police walking a dog through the alley looking for things so I asked them what was going on. He replied 'Watch the news tonight.' I said 'Don't tell me it's another dead body and he said 'It's parts.'"

Police are confirming the discovery of a severed human head found in a box.

"It was a decapitated head," Whitnack told reporters. "I have no idea if there was other body parts but that was all I could tell, distinguished from the pictures."

Doris Stapleton with RCMP K-Division says work is now underway to determine if the head is related to another case ---  a body found in a ditch near Ranfurly on the weekend.

"We are aware of the file by the Edmonton Police Service and it's my understanding that efforts are underway between the EPS and the medical examiners office to identify them."

All that is evident at this point that the gruesome discovery happened, is a stain on the pavement that's been diluted in an attempt to wash it away.

"I'm kind of shocked," said Judy who wouldn't give her last name.   The worker in the nearby strip mall says something like this "could happen anywhere."   "It's a quiet place, a quiet area."  (lk, sj)
