Dozens of Edmonton firefighters along with police and EMS workers gather at mid morning for the annual Firefighters Memorial ceremony in Old Strathcona.
Firefighters in dress uniforms will march in rank and file along with their honour guard and the Edmonton Police Pipe Band to the Memorial Plaza on 83rd Avenue west of 103rd Street. The ceremony at 10:30 will honour fallen firefighters dating back to 1922, seventeen retired firefighters who have died in the past year and firefighters killed in the terror attacks eleven years ago.
Ralph Hopp and Murray Clark, the last Edmonton firefighters to die while fighting a blaze, were lost in a flashover at a burning disco in August, 1976. Since then many more firefighters have lost their lives to cancers blamed on exposure to toxic compounds in smoke from burning materials.
