Today at 11am he announced he would step down as Edmonton’s mayor. I thought he might be tempted to go another term, I thought he might like to be a four term mayor; alas it was not to be.
Before he took the chair and donned the beaver pelt, many an Edmontonian bitched and whined about Calgary always getting the lion’s share of everything. He said the biggest problem with Edmonton was Edmonton’s citizens. We don’t believe we are entitled to more. We don’t fight for more. And then he stepped up to bat and the game was on.
Was he an easy guy? No. Some thought him a bully, a tyrant, maybe even a warlord. But I guarantee at this juncture of our city’s political future we are unlikely to take a mamby pamby clown as a mayor anymore. ...

Too Fast!

In the end it was a pretty good weekend for my daughter. Despite being the only name they screwed up as she crossed the stage to get her diploma, and the make-up that landed on her dress minutes before she left to get her picture taken, and the boyfriend that didn't want to stay past the supper at the banquet. I'll fix the audio when I edit the video and her name will be right. Carole got the stain out of the dress or at least managed to find a way to hide it from the camera. I delivered her and her cousin to a house party on the Friday night so her memory of that evening wouldn't be staying at home texting her boyfriend.
As the banquet was wrapping up a mother walked by our table and commented loudly "Well that was a big waste of money!" I felt ...

Always Room At Group Site 2

Now that summer seems to have finally arrived it's time to start planning our annual camping trip. We go to Ol' MacDonalds near Stettler for about 10 days every year. We used to tent it, then we borrowed a motor home, then we owned a motor home and now we borrow again. The MacDonalds are close friends of ours and it's my buddy Kevin MacDonald who always manages to find us something to sleep in every year. I realize that's not really "camping" but it's no cruise ship either. We pretty much cook everything on an open fire or a Coleman stove, we spend 90% of our time outdoors, and we almost always end up rushing someone to the Stettler hospital before the trip is over.
My big kids join us for at least part of the trip. Sometimes co-workers camp too. We always have a few comedians and radio ...

Under Renovation - We Apologise For The Inconvenience

I reached a milestone today... I finished the dental work that's taken 7 visits and over 10 hours. I'm relieved. I had resigned myself to just having painful teeth for the rest of my life thinking that it would take too long and cost too much money to fix. I'm grateful Dr. Ron Gibb reached out and talked me into coming to his office. Now that it's behind me it really wasn't that bad at all. I also started back to the gym this week. I'm not doing a full work out but I knew it was time to go back the day I ate my first pizza since the surgery. If my appetite has returned so will the weight and I want to get back on track with my new healthy life. The surgery actually caused me to lose another 5 or 6 pounds. I should probably think about ...

Class Of 2013

This week my daughter graduates from High School. I'm so proud of her. Not just for graduating but for being a really great person. All of my kids make me proud, of course, but it's milestones like graduation that make you stop and think just how lucky you are to have great kids. Children are like a mixed bag of seeds. You give them all the same love and care and wait to see what grows. It's rarely what you were expecting. Madi is still trying to figure out what she wants to do with her life and I've told her to pursue what ever makes her happy and everything else will fall into place. Until she figures out what that is we're happy to have her live with us while she continues her education.
It's funny to think back on Kindergarten where I had to volunteer every day for ...

Light 'Em Up!

Edmonton could soon be lighting up the river valley under a proposal to put LED bulbs on local bridges to create “spectacular” decorative illumination. Mayor Stephen Mandel asked city staff for options last October after ATB Financial CEO Dave Mowat suggested lining bridges with small lights to accent their shapes. The move would change the bridges “from drab to spectacular … There’s a sense of a dance of light, of a bejewelled dance partner with a plunging neckline,” Mowat said.
Today on the show we're going to talk to Mr. Mowat. He reached out to me last week to ask if he could have some radio time to sell the idea of lighting the High Level bridge and honestly, even if ATB didn't sponsor the Edmonton Comedy Festival, I would have said "yes" immediately. I think this is a brilliant idea and I think it will go a long way ...

It's Always Something

Back when I was a smoker and I got a cold it would last forever and people would say "Oh that's because you're a smoker." Well, as you all know, I'm not a smoker anymore and yet I've now suffered through almost 2 weeks with this damn cold. It's moved from my head to my chest to my joints back to my head and several times along the way it hid my voice. I've had dry cough days, sneezing days, headache days, sore throat days and stuffed up days. I'm not sure exactly what strain of cold or flu this is but it's a bad one. It grabbed me when I was in the hospital and it doesn't want to let go.
I want to get back to the gym to exercise but I feel bad about coughing and sneezing all over the equipment there. It will take more than ...

No Good Deed...

I believe this almost marks the end of my good deed gigs. Tomorrow night I'm doing a practically free show for Registered Nurses and Saturday a very cheap show for "Friends Fighting Cancer" in Bruderheim. I say "almost" because I still have 2 free shows in June. One for Graham Neil's Annual cancer fundraiser in Sherwood Park and a MADD fundraiser in Fort Saskatchewan. I decided to top up the karma tank a few months back and filled every open weekend date with a good cause gig. That was before my health took a turn for the worse and performing on stage became more difficult. I am literally exhausted and soaked in sweat when I finish a set these days. I really need to take some time off and get my health back to where it needs to be.
I hate to say no to a good cause but they ...

McHappy Day Today

Make your meal count!
Today is McHappy Day. Grab a coffee or eat a meal and you could make a big difference in a child's life. Stop by a McDonalds today and $1 from every Big Mac, Happy Meal, and hot McCafébeverage you buy will be donated to Ronald McDonald Houses and other local children’s charities in Edmonton.
I'll be on location with INews880's Tricia Kindleman at the Ellerslie McDonalds (11053 Ellerslie Road) from 3 until 6 today and would love it if you dropped by and said hello. But if you can't make it out to our location please make it to any location of McDonalds and help raise money for a great cause.
Last year Canadians raised over $8 million dollars and we want to beat that total!
As always when I am on location expect a freak rain or snow storm or perhaps high winds and a dust ...

Here We Go Again

They say a change is as good as a rest. The show will change all week long as we run through co-hosts. Monday and Tuesday expect J'Lyn Nye from Fresh, on Wednesday Tricia Kindleman from INews880, and Thursday and Friday 630 Ched's Dan Tencer. I guess no one thought to ask CISN to send somebody up. I'm grateful to have someone sitting across from me to talk to and to share the blame. Wednesday has us on location for McHappy Days and, since locations are always tough to do on your own, I'm once again grateful for the company. Next week will possibly see even more new co-hosts. It's like we're conducting job interviews or something.
One of the reasons I came back to work so early was the fact I would be working with new co-hosts all week. As you may have noticed, our breaks have all changed slightly ...
