There's not a whole lot of reasons for any of us to get before noon which, in many ways, is one of the big advantages to being an entertainer. Even when Carole and I owned a club the earliest we had to open the doors was noon and we sometimes did that a little late. Almost every meeting I've had with my agent was before or after a show and usually involved drinking. The Afternoon News was a perfect fit for me because 3 p.m. is a realistic time for me to be anywhere. Then came the comedy festival.
While all meetings of the board happen after 9 p.m. not everyone embraces our love of sleeping. First it was lunch meetings with sponsors that caused me to actually set an alarm. That soon became late morning meetings with venues and ...

What Can You Do With $1.36?

This Thursday when Primeau and I will be at Sobey's in support of The Edmonton Food Bank I know I'll be thinking back to a darker time in my life.
About 25 years ago I found myself recently divorced, broke and alone with 2 kids who needed winter jackets and food. I had been fired by my employer and given a severance cheque of $1.36. It was the amount owed me after deducting for the 2 weeks I had taken off earlier in the year that I hadn't yet qualified for. I deserved to be fired. I hadn't been focused on my job. My life had spiralled out of control after my divorce and I was focused only on fighting my ex-wife for custody of my children. The battle had left me emotionally exhausted and financially broke.
I walked along the street with a box containing personal items from my ...

Eeny, meeny, miny, moe

After all these months isn't it amazing that Primeau and I still can't agree on what a good topic is. Gun registry, underground power cables and patio permits just aren't on my radar. Parenting, break-ups, and bullying just aren't on Primeaus. I'll pretty much talk about anything and so will Primeau but we're always trying to steer the conversation to something each other is more excited to talk about.

My gauge is this: If I had friends over for a game night what might we talk about? The cover of Time Magazine and the breast feeding mother? Yes. The red tape involved with opening a patio cafe? No. Still it's a team effort so Lesley talked about bullying with me so I'll talk about patio licenses and we'll see how this half of the show goes. Primeau has a lot more experience than me at this and she knows ...

Breaking News... I'm Leaving For Work!

Here's the problem with social networking. We have so many tools at our disposal now to communicate with the world including Facebook, Twitter, Texting, websites and, of course, blogs but do I have anything to say? I post on Facebook that I have a Twitter account, I tweet that I have a Facebook page, I post a link on Facebook to my new blog entry and I write in my blog that I have a Facebook page but other than telling you there's a dozen ways for me to say something to you I don't always have something to say and I'm not alone.
Did you know a lot of celebrities hire services to tweet for them and those services retweet those tweets under other names in an effort to make their clients tweets more popular? There's all kinds of companies out there that specialize in search engine placements for ...

@GroseAndrew

I've decided to get my own Twitter account seperate from @PrimeauAndGrose. My new personal account is @GroseAndrew. It had to be done. The PrimeauAnd Grose account presents some problems for me. Firstly, I'm tweeting on behalf of both Primeau and myself which limits what I can say. Secondly, I'm tweeting on behalf of a show on CHED so that limits what I should say. Finally, I know everyone at Corus reads those tweets so that limits pretty much anything I would typically say. There's also the possibility that I one day may not be at CHED and the day I leave I'd have no followers and that's just unacceptable for an entertainer.
Now that doesn't mean my new account will be a free for all. I'm still associated with the show and the station so I'll have to use common sense. I just want to also be a comedian and, these ...

Money For Nothing

As elusive as big foot I have, today, a full price nooner. Comics tell stories to one another of that choice gig that paid full price, had no restrictions on language, didn't require you to wear a suit, and took place during the day on a weekday but few have ever seen it with their own eyes. This morning I got out of bed, jumped in the shower, threw on some clothes and headed to Red Deer for just such a rarity.
These things are never without their catches though. The customer has had 2 other comedians that have bombed in the past and I'm their last hope at ever hiring a comedian in the future. I also have to get back to Edmonton in time to do a radio show. Since the time I usually take to prepare for a show will be spent driving instead I had to ...

To Text or Not To Text

The addition of live texting to the show has had its ups and downs. I keep an eye on those texts the entire show and answer as many as possible time permitting. Most are meant to add information to the discussion. Some are jokes that I laugh at but can't read on the air. A few are questions about my opinion on something. Once every few weeks I get an insult like yesterday:
"Primeau's 6 o'clock show used to be good. Went downhill when she teamed up with the so called comic."
I'm never sure what to do with them. I don't want to encourage a listener to switch the station but I always wonder what's forcing someone to listen to a show they don't enjoy and why they took the trouble to tell me they're not enjoying it. You would think it would be easier to switch stations ...

Business As Usual

Back in the co-host chair. No idea what the topic is. That's right... she's back. After a 2 week "vacation" Primeau returned today and, for the first time in a long time, Primeau and Grose will feature Primeau and Grose. I'm honestly not sure how this show is going to go. We'll need to find our chemistry again and quickly.
Primeau wanted to talk about who our best Primier was and I wanted to talk about a mix up with fortune cookies. It isn't possible to do 2 shows at once so we compromised and talked about fortune cookies. It was at that moment I figured out why we work. Lesley keeps me on my toes and I keep her on hers. Today I won but tomorrow I may lose and we're talking bout something I know nothing about. The important thing is that at the end of the day we've gotten ...

Bunnygate

Last night Carole and I came to the CHED studios and distributed chocolate bunnies to everyone on the floor. We kept out of sight of the small studio where Dan was doing Inside Sports so no one would know it was us. The one person we ran into we made swear to keep it a secret. He did. The thing is I assumed he wouldn't so when I got to work I asked Primeau how she liked her bunny to which she replied "How did you know I got a bunnÿ?"So much for keeping that a secret. I also tweeted "CHED studios broken into last night? The culprit left chocolate bunnies everwhere. CSI is examining a hare."" I clearly can't keep a secret.
The 2 people who didn't get a bunny were me (because I have no desk or office) and my boss, Syd Smith, because I'm an idiot. Of ...

Radio is Like Being a Boy Scout.... Always Be Prepared

Today ends 2 weeks of anchoring the 630 CHED Afternoon News. Having said yesterday that I'm exhausted from doing it I have to say that I'm sad to see my anchoring duties come to an end. Around about 5 o'clock yesterday I realized I actually was getting pretty good at doing it. It's all about getting into a routine.
The biggest stress comes from thinking about filling 3 hours with content without Primeau there to catch me when I fall. A solid hour of show prep in the morning and an increased confidence in being prepared makes that stress all but disappear. A coffee with my wife before I leave for the studio helps get me comfortable with the topics and is my first gauge of where the conversation might go on air. Hi-liting the statistics or that perfect quote helps me find the information I want in the ...
