That said, in tight games, I'm still more confident in Vancouver's ability to find a clutch goal.Dan picks: Vancouver(2) St. Louis vs. (7) San JoseThe Sharks have been to the final four in each of the last two seasons while the Blues enjoyed a surge this year that nearly carried them to the top of the conference. There's no arguing what the Blues did in the regular season, let by spectacular goaltending, but I feel hesitant to buy into it up against a team with so much experience in the post-season. Dan picks: San Jose(3) Phoenix vs. (6) ChicagoAnother tough draw for Phoenix, ...

The Final 33

In the midst of the All Star Break, I find myself considering the potential for a roller coaster ride in the final 2.5 months of the season. We know that the year will come to an end in early April for the 6th consecutive season, but there's a lot that we don't know. There could be some big changes ahead in Oil Country, and they're all simplified into 2 questions:WHICH TEAM WILL SHOW UP MORE OFTEN IN THE FINAL 33 GAMES?Heading into the break, the Oilers posted an impressive pair of games against San Jose and Vancouver, earning 3 of a possible 4 points against Western Conference division leaders. Yes, they were outchanced and outshot in both games, but there was a lot to like, starting with their compete level. It seems really unfortunate to have to mention compete level as a positive, given that we'd all like ...

A Glance at My Inbox

Edmonton was to play the worst team in the NHL tonite......EDMONTON is the worst team in the NHL, who are they trying to kid.Sad sack management,Sad sack coaches,Sad sack defensemen,Sad sack Horcoff, Hemsky, Gagner.-----I have never written an email to you Dan or Rob. However, I am now at my breaking point with this team. The fact that Horcoff is the captain of this team speaks volumes to the mismanagement of the club. I don't care how many lottery picks and young talent the team possesses; if they aren't surrounded by the right pieces and aren't coached effectively then the team isn't going anywhere, anytime soon. They will continue to remain at the bottom of the league. We look like the worst team in the league again, with no light at the end of the tunnel. I know that they've lost 3 in a row and 4 of their last 5, but let's not look at this from a one game or 3 game perspective. We've got 17 games, so let's look at the overall picture here. The Oilers are 9-6-2. Tied for 4th in the Conference. If you want the glass half empty look, yes, they are also tied for 10th in the Conference. But...do you know where they were last year on November 14? Last. In the NHL. 4-9-3, 11 points, and already 7 points out of a playoff spot.Last season they got their 9th win on December 2nd. This year, it was November 8.By this point last season, the team had been beat by 5 goals...not given up 5...BEAT BY 5 goals...4 ...

Tencer's Blog: Opening Night Oilers Roster (UPDATE)

***Update...while I originally had Gilbert Brule as an extra forward on the opening night roster, the team has decided to waive him***
When the regular season starts on October 9, this is my best guess as to the roster that the Edmonton Oilers will ice. This is, of course, given the best information that I can gather on injury situations. If one of the players I have slated to be on IR is actually healthy for the start of the season, that changes things. Ditto if the team makes a move for a defenseman. Thoughts?

Dear Vancouver Canucks fans,I know how it feels today. Nearly 5 years ago, I experienced exactly the same pain. The loss. The letdown. The what-if's and why-not's. The agony of being so close. The helplessness of, once again, being so far.To be frank, it's a pain that I would not wish on my worst professional sports enemies. But, since somebody has to experience it...I sure am glad that it's you.First, let me say congratulations on finishing 2nd out of 30 teams in the NHL this season. In the 40 long seasons that you've been a part of the NHL, this year was ...

Stanley Cup Final Prediction

7/8 in Round 1.

3/4 in Round 2.

2/2 in Round 3.

12/14 overall, which isn't bad. Way better than last year's disaster, too. I couldn't make a correct prediction to save my life. I was coming across like Harold Camping. In any event, there's only one series that matters. And damn, do I hope I'm wrong.

VANCOUVER vs. BOSTON

The Canucks have been leaps and bounds ahead of everybody else all season long. They dominated the regular season and have been, by a wide margin, the better team in each of their 3 playoff series. The Bruins, on the other hand, have looked strong but have definitely had some shake-and-bake en route to the Final.

Vancouver's depth is better at every position, though the high end of the Bruins defense is better than the high end of Vancouver's, and it's not at all ...

Official: Thrashers Moving to Winnipeg

After years of waiting and weeks of negotiating, Winnipeg has NHL hockey back. Multiple sources, speaking on conditions of anonymity, told me on Tuesday night that a sale agreement between Atlanta Spirit Group and True North Sports and Entertainment had been completed and signed off in a move that will see the Thrashers relocate to Manitoba, effective next season. The deal was finally consummated in Atlanta on Tuesday with representatives from both sides present.

The purchase price paid by True North is $170M USD. Exact terms of the deal were not readily available, though it has been speculated that the NHL will garnish $60M USD as a relocation fee. Earlier in the week, the same sources told me that an announcement was expected on Wednesday, though that has not been confirmed at this hour. It is believed that the announcement will take place at MTS Centre, where the team ...

Round 3 Playoff Predictions

In Round 1, I went 7/8. In Round 2, I went 3/4. Here are my predictions for Round 3:

(1) Vancouver vs. (2) San Jose

This is a battle between 2 teams who have underachieved based on expectations in recent years, though that's certainly more true for San Jose than it is for Vancouver. The Sharks have been an elite team since the lockout, and have only once made it to the 3rd round prior to this year...that happened to be last season, where they lost to Chicago. The Sharks are just through a hard fought series against Detroit, but their big players came up large when it mattered most. Joe Thornton has been a force in the playoffs, Logan Couture has translated his great regular season play into the playoffs, and Antti Niemi has still never lost a playoff series (6-0). The Canucks, meanwhile, had a brief ...

1st Round Predictions - Recap

WESTERN CONFERENCE
