The Cariwest festival goes this weekend.People downtown will be able to see the parade Saturday afternoon, and take in more festivities Sunday at Churchill square. At the parade is where you'll be able to see the extravagant costumes."The costumes are generally 34 feet wide and 25-30 feet high. Those are the large costumes that we spend all year building," said Donna Coombs-Montrose, President of Cariwest. "Every year we creat new costumes, and so in our parade you will see brand new costumes."Coombs-Montrose says the festival has its roots in the days of slavery, when the slaves would take time to celebrate the sugar cane harvest using their masters' fine gowns. The parade starts on 99th Avenue and 107th Street at noon.
