A head-on collision early this morning on the Yellowhead happened  because the driver of a car  was going eastbound in the westbound lanes.

Edmonton Police say at 67th street, the 45 year old driver of an oncoming SUV had no time to react. The crash injured him and badly injured his 40 year old male passenger. The passenger is in critical condition in hospital. The 45 yar old woman in the car is also in hospital. She escaped becoming burned when a passerby pulled her out moments after fire broke out in her vehicle. She's reported in serious, but stable condition.

EPS traffic investigators don't believe alcohol played a role in the crash.
