Oilers bitten hard by Coyotes
10:30pm
Edmonton traveled down to the Phoenix Monday night in hopes of snapping their 9 game on the road losing streak but ended up losing 6-1 in regulation. The Coyotes started going to work right away in the first period scoring two goals despite being out shot by the copper and blue. Ed Jovanovski opened scoring at 9:58 and Matthew Lombardi capitalized on a breakdown in the Oilers defense in the last minute of the period. The Coyotes would double their lead by the end of the second, Matthew Lombardi scored his second of the night and and Jim Vandermeer would capitalize on a scoring chance shortly after. The third period brought about the only Oilers goal of the game, but not before Radim Vrbata scored a shorthanded goal on the breakaway and Robert Lang eventually threw the game beyond reach with the coyotes sixth and final goal of the night. The lone Edmonton goal came from top liner Dustin Penner, his 23rd of the season. Oilers action continues Wednesday when the copper and blue fly to Anaheim to take on the Ducks (8:00 p.m., 630 CHED).(mj) Click HERE for streaming post-game audio from the sports team at 630CHED.com! Husky Energy announces third significant gas discovery in South China Sea
6:40pm
Husky Energy Inc. (TSX:HSE) has announced its third significant discovery in the South China Sea. An exploration well in the waters south of Hong Kong tested natural gas at an equipment restricted rate of 57 million cubic feet per day, with indications the Liuhua 29-1 well could produce more than 90 million cubic feet of gas per day in the future. Husky chief executive John Lau says the discovery, and two others in the same block, support earlier estimates of up to six trillion cubic feet of natural gas initially in place for the area. Early engineering and design work has wrapped up on Husky's Liwan 3-1 project, to the southwest of the discovery announced Monday. Last week, Lau said Husky would make a decision on spinning off its southeast Asian assets into a new company some time around the middle of the year. Husky, controlled by Hong Kong billionaire Li Ka-shing, has oilsands holdings, offshore operations in the Maritimes and a chain of gas stations. (The Canadian Press, ccg) On the Net: HuskyEnergy.com

No deal reached over Question Period at the 'Ledge
5:15pm
The hope that all the parties in the legislature could agree on a way to run question period isn't panning out. Speaker Ken Kowalski is trying to come up with a rotation for questions to make every one happy. The Wild Rose Alliance which is a bigger party than it used to be wants more time. The New Democrats don't want to lose what they've had. And the Liberals seem to be the lone hold out on a new agreement. Rob Anderson, the Alliance's house leader, says the Liberals don't lose any advantage under the new system, "My understanding is that the Liberals will actually be moving up in the rotation not down, and they will not be losing questions they will have the same amount of questions that they had prior. So I think this is just Ms. Blakeman ... being Ms Blakeman". The Speaker's ruling from last week will stay in place, until everyone can agree. (sj, twd, ccg)

No further budget hints during first QP
3:30pm
Opposition parties went fishing for details of what will be in Tuesday's provincial budget. But, Liberal leader David Swann and others got "skunked" in their quizzing of the premier and finance minister during Monday's first Question Period of the new session. "What is the long-term plan to establish a stable, economic future for our province?", questioned Swann. "The honourable leader of the opposition will have to wait until (Tuesday) for all the budget details," replied Premier Ed Stelmach. Last week's throne speech indicated the Stelmach government will provide a five-year funding committment for health-care, plus measures to keep Alberta competitive. 630 CHED will have live coverage of the budget starting about 3 p.m., Tuesday.(bp)

Clayton fires lawyer; prelim set
3pm
The man charged after a hostage-taking incident in downtown Edmonton last fall has fired his lawyer. Patrick Clayton, 38, is accused of taking hostages at the Worker's Compensation Board last October. On Monday afternoon, he fired reknowned lawyer Peter Royal, against the insistence of both, Royal and the presiding provincial court judge. Clayton choked back tears during the afternoon court appearance, telling the court that he's "done fighting" and was planning to start a hunger strike. When asked to enter a plea on the numerous charges he's facing, Clayton answered, "No comment." The judge then made the decision that the accused will be tried by judge and jury. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for April. The trial is scheduled for the end of July. (ly/bp)

UofA researcher identifies concerns with CT scans
2:10pm
The risks are small -- but potentially deadly. Over 650,000 kids visit North American emergency rooms with head injuries each year. The University of Aberta's Terry Klassen says CT scans can save some lives, but can put others at risk. "There is a seven in 10,000 chance they could eventually get a cancer they could die from so it's not high but it was there in the background," says Klassen, who has just completed the first part of a study which lays out seven criteria doctors should follow before calling for a CT scan on a child. It's not ready to be made into policy yet. Klassen says another year of study is needed.(rh/bp)

Mounties & Sheriffs to team-up on Alberta's highways
1:45pm
The RCMP and the province are confirming details of a traffic enforcement shake-up on Alberta's highway system. The plan is to integrate Alberta Sheriffs on traffic duty with the RCMP traffic services. Deputy Commissioner Rod Knecht says total integration between the two agencies is the approach going forward. He says pilot projects took place in Wetaskiwin, Whitecourt, Airdrie and Olds. Knecht says each location has a different set up, "The Westaskiwin model proved to be the most effective in meeting our traffic safety goals, while recognizing many opportunities at the other three locations." Solicitor General Frank Oberle says the winning model has an integrated structure under the command of an RCMP officer. But, he says the two law enforcement agencies will continue to have separate administrations. Oberle adds that money will be saved from shared infrastructure and operating costs between the units. Prime minister meets with business leaders, Alberta caucus in Calgary
12:40PM
Carbon capture and the state of the economy topped the agenda when Prime Minister Stephen Harper met with Calgary business leaders this morning. Cal Nichols, chairman of the Alberta Enterprise Group, says they also talked about how long stimulus funds should continue. He says everyone agrees the money can't last forever, but it appears current and planned programs are to continue. Doug Mitchell, co-chairman of a Calgary law firm, says specific requests for the upcoming budget were not discussed. He says there's a positive mood among business leaders even though Canada's economic recovery is still fragile. Harper didn't speak to reporters before heading off to another budget discussion with politicians. (cp,blb)

YESS says NO layoffs
11:55am
Edmonton's Youth Emergency Shelter Society (YESS) is happy to announce it will not have to lay-off any staff. After failing about $270,000 short of last year's fundraising goal of $1 million, the society was preparing for the possibility of having to chop some staff. That was until the city stepped in to provide YESS with some emergency funding needed. The city provided $100,000 to help restore the Connaught Armoury, at 103rd Street and 85th Avenue, that YESS took over last fall. Other businesses and individuals in the community have also come forward to help make up the shortfall. Deb Cautley with the society says YESS is extremely thankful. "(We) just can't say 'thank-you' enough to everybody -- to the media, the citizens of Edmonton, to the mayor and the city departments, to all the businesses that have come on line to help us, to all the groups that have come on line," says Cautley. "It really says to our kids that they're important." The organization provides a place where young frightened kids and teenagers with problems can go for help when they are in a crisis. Cautley says the funding from the city is a one time thing.(ms/ls/bp)

Taxi rate changes ready to take flight
11:40am
The Vehicle for Hire Commission is going to vote Wednesday on a plan to change the cost of taking a taxi from the city to Edmonton International Airport. If approved, the price a passenger will have to pay will come down. Leon Lubin, the vice-chair of the commission, says all cab companies have agreed to do something about it. Once the bylaw is changed, and that should happen by the end of the month, Edmonton cab companies will run the meter, but will charge the flat rate Airport Taxi charges. "There was a great deal of difficulty with people coming into the city saying, 'I paid $56 to come into town, and now you're charging me $75 to go back out to the airport?'" pointed out Lubon. "It sounded like we were ripping people off." The only time the customer will pay the meter rate is if it is lower than the flat rate. That will happen in some circumstances from the south side or west end, likely in the evening when traffic isn't as bad. The Edmonton companies are trying to set themselves up so they can bid for the new airport contract when it comes up next year. ...

Edmonton housing starts up from a year ago
9:58AM
If you're a home builder in Edmonton, it appears 2010 is off to a good start. That's because housing starts in January were up 40% from a year ago. Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation says builders started more single-detached homes. Even though there are not as many apartments getting built, analysts expect that to get better throughout the year. And they think single-detached production will stay strong as the economy recovers. January is the eighth month in a row that builders in Edmonton started more homes than the year before. Calgary police officer struck by vehicle, suspect shot
9:00AM
Calgary police have taped off three areas of a normally quiet southeast community as they piece together what led to a pair of officers firing shots during a violent traffic stop. A dark-coloured older model sedan is sitting in front of a home with a smashed front end and what appear to be two bullet holes through the windshield. Police say around 3:00am Monday morning officers stopped a vehicle, which rammed into one of the officers. Police then opened fire hitting the male suspect at least once. Both officers suffered minor injuries. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team will be conducting an investigation to determine if the actions were justified. Oda urges 'one final effort' for Haiti as donations eclipse $113m
8:45AM
Canadians have donated $113 million - and counting - to non-governmental agencies involved in Haitian earthquake relief. International Co-operation Minister Bev Oda calls the response ``amazing'' and says it ``reflects the true values of Canadians.' But she says the job's not done. She's urging potential donors to ``make that one final effort, one big push'' and contribute before the federal government's Friday deadline for matching donations dollar-for-dollar. Oda says there are many qualified Canadian-based organizations working in Haiti that could use the money. There are 27 Canadians confirmed dead among the 200,000 killed in the Jan. 12 quake; another 75 were still missing on Sunday. (cp,blb) On The Net: Canadian International Development Agency

Frightening home invasion in south Edmonton
5:55AM
A bizarre southside home invasion involves a pregnant woman wrapped in duct tape and another man making a jump for life from the trunk of a moving car. A man returning to his home near 43 Street and 36 "A" Avenue early Monday was grabbed by several home invaders who had already wrapped his pregnant sister and another man in duct tape before stuffing them into a bathroom. Before he was manhandled into the trunk of a waiting car, he heard a shot fired and believed his sister had been wounded or worse. The man somehow opened the trunk from the inside, jumped from the moving car and ran for his life to the nearest house where he broke in to use the phone. Police raced to the house and found the people in the bathroom hadn't been harmed but because of her pregnancy, the woman was taken to hospital for a check-up. The man who interrupted the home invasion was apparently the target of some kind of drug beef. (EM,blb)
