Calgary man is the only fatality in second BC avalanche
12:50pm
Revelstoke RCMP say they have accounted for everyone who was in the area of a second deadly avalanche in the region in a week. A 30-year-old Calgary man was buried by the slide and killed in the category four snow slide at eagle pass mountain while another was hurt. Mayor David Raven says a check of parking lots and access roads finds no indication there could be more victims. "From what they're telling me, i don't know if there are any further people in there. They've accounted for everyone who was at the trail heads and roads going in, so there's every reason to believe, as search and rescue and RCMP do, that there's no one left in there. This latest avalanche occurred not far from last weekend's boulder mountain slide. (ro, qr)

Join Together Alberta hosts one last rally before budget is finalized
12:39PM
A group who is desperate to effect some change in the minds of MLA's rallied at the Legislature Saturday. Join Together Alberta says while the government may be increasing health care spending, spokesman Bill Moore-Kilgannon says there will be cuts to other areas such as post secondary education. He says, "The costs are going to be increasing, programs are going to be shut down. And, I find it really troubling that the government has cut the grants to low-income families, and students from northern Alberta who traditionally have very low participation in post secondary education. These things we need to invest in, not be cutting at this time in our economy". The rally comes just before the third and final reading of the provincial budget on Thursday. (jg)

Dubnyk nets 1st career win
11:46pm
It took eleven starts, almost 800 minutes between the pipes and three shootouts, but Devan Dubnyk is finally a winner. Edmonton's rookie netminder stopped Detroit forward Valtteri Filppula in the third round of a shootout after Ryan Potulny and Gilbert Brule had beaten the guy at the other end to lift the Oilers to a 3-2 win, his first career NHL victory. It seemed like it was Dubnyk's night right from the start when the Oilers went up 2-0 in the first five minutes of the game, but an all too familiar storyline began to unfold in the third period. With the score 2-1, Edmonton was outshot 17-3, and with just 0.2-seconds remaining in the game, Detroit's Brian Rafalski tied it up. With no goals scored in overtime, it came down to the shootout though, and Dubnyk came up big when it mattered most. "I'm going to have to sit down for a bit after that one," said a relieved Dubnyk after the game. "When that last goal went in I just tried to [think] don't flinch, don't think back, don't say 'I wish that could have not happened - you could say all these things, I just tried to ...

Close call collision at MIllwoods gas station
8:20pm
Edmonton police say it could have been worse, a lot worse! photos by: Edwin Germann This after a white SUV came landed on top of an Orange taxi cab on the city's south side. Standing on a residential street corner normally packed with children across from a school, EPS Sergeant Maurice Brodeur described the situation. "Just prior to 5 o'clock, a vehicle at a high rate of speed just missed the curb at Millwoods Road and 80th Street, came flying across the grassy area, and was headed straight for the 7-11 store and pump area. There was a minivan parked getting fuel, and the driver, thank god, was in the store, when that vehicle crossed somewhat climbed the cab and took out one of the gas pumps with fuel spilling everywhere." Brodeur says fire crews did a great job containing the fuel spill while two people in the SUV were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Charges of impaired driving causing injury, and dangerous driving, are now pending against the driver.(td, ro)

College of social workers feels Albertans aren't taxed enough
12:25pm
The Alberta College of Social Workers has proposed a new policy framework to the provincial government. It was prepared by the Parkland Institute. Dianna Gibson, the institute's research director, says Albertans aren't taxed enough.   "We had stated that progressive taxes with increased progressivity at the top end," says Gibson. "But, more than that, Alberta has by far the lowest taxes -- far, far lower than most other jurisdictions, and taxes could be raised in many areas and still be the lowest in the nation. Our corporate tax, at 10 per cent, is far below the 12-16 per cent range of other provinces."   They propose raising other taxes as well, like with liquor.   The college claims the boom only helped those at the top, and did nothing to help working families. Shelters deal with funding cuts
11:00am
Several on-reserve women's shelters got a shock this week when Indian and Northern Affairs Canada informed them their funding is being cut. It came without warning.   Sandra Ermineskin, the executive director of the Ermineskin Women's Shelter in Hobbema, says her shelter is slated to lose $60,000, leaving it with a budget of just under $500,000.   "One of the impacts that we're going to feel at the Ermineskin Women's Shelter is the groceries," says "Because our shelter is continuously full."   To cope, the shelter will be looking at cutting supplies, and laying off one staff member.   Jan Reimer, the provincial co-ordinator of the Alberta Council of Women’s Shelters, says the council has received a one-year reprieve because the cut has been put off to the 2011-2012 fiscal year. However, she says the rollback is just as devastating. (sj, bp, ccg) On the Net: ACWS.ca: Maskwaci - Ermineskin Women's Shelter Society

10am
The conviction for a young Edmonton man, who murdered his pregnant friend nearly five years ago stands... He was high on crystal meth, when he shot and killed Olivia Talbot, 19, in November of 2005. In 2007, a jury found him guilty of first-degree murder. In 1964, Troy came to Edmonton to teach first at Archbishop MacDonald High School, and in 1970, he went to St. Joseph's College. Education and sports were life long keys to the man. He liked to get young people involved in sports.   "It gives them the spirit of competition," said Troy. "They learn respect for other people, to admit you make mistakes."   And, he was a hands-on man when it came to schooling.   "I've always believed in practical education," he said. "That's one of the troubles in our education -- we train everyone to be executives and nobody to do the work."   Father Troy will be remembered with both the basketball tournament, arena, and school named after him. Hundreds homeless after Calgary apartment fire
4:35am
UPDATE: Hundreds of people are homeless after a massive fire destroyed much of a four-story condominium complex in southwest Calgary.     The blaze at a 159 unit building on Millrise Drive, sent massive, dark grey clouds of smoke into the sky Thursday. One firefighter was injured and taken to Rockyview Hospital, where he was in stable condition. Deputy Fire Chief Len McCharles said the fire appears to have started on a balcony and when crews arrived about 12:15 p.m., it had spread into two suites, crawling its way up into the attic space where it quickly spread. McCharles said it's too early to tell the extent of the damage, which appeared to be mainly confined to the top floor, noting water damage to some suites untouched by fire may be extensive. Calgary man pleads guilty to killing puppy
1:41am
A Calgary man has pleaded guilty to clubbing a puppy to death. Jacob Rabeau, 21, will be sentenced on May 7 for animal cruelty for fatally striking Shea, a four-month-old Husky, on Aug. 2, 2007. Crown prosecutor Richelle Freiheit said Rabeau was urinating in an alley behind Shea's owner's home when the puppy ran towards Rabeau ``in an excited state.'' Court heard Rabeau thought the puppy was going to bite him so he went to his car, got a wooden bat or two by four out of his vehicle and swung it, hitting the pup in the head. Justin Kotulak noticed his pup had escaped from the yard, found him injured in the alley and picked him up, and the dog died in his arms. Defence lawyer Willie de Wit said Rabeau was initially concerned for his safety, but overreacted by using a piece of wood to strike the animal.   (aw/Calgary Sun)
