Stelmach relieved

12/4/2008

The Premier is weighing in on the Governor General's decision to prorogue Parliament.

The move means the Harper government won't face a confidence vote -- and, likely defeat at the hands of a coalition supported by the Liberals, NDP, and Bloc Quebecois -- next Monday.

Ed Stelmach says the extra time will provide some much-needed breathing space.

"I feel much better, relieved," said Stelmach, late Thursday morning. "This is the best thing to do. Otherwise, we would have been putting this country in the hands of a coalition. I don't know what their plans were going to be, or how they were going to treat Alberta. This is going to give us time to deliver a much better plan."

Stelmach adds he intends to send a letter on behalf of the province, outlining Alberta's position ahead of a first ministers meeting scheduled for January 16th.

Prime Minister Harper says Parliament will resume January 26th, with a budget.
