The Edmonton Oilers gave fans a rare and unique experience Sunday afternoon.

Over a thousand people gathered at Hawrelak Park, to watch the team play a good old fashioned shinny hockey game.

Oilers President, Patrick LaForge, says it was step one of giving back to the fans after a long lockout.

“One of many steps we have planned, maybe the most fun, in my opinion one of the most fun things you can do is watch the team play, especially in an environment like this. It’s magical.”

Jordan Eberle, who was one of the team captains along with Taylor Hall, talked about the outdoor pond hockey experience.

“This is where it all began, the outdoor pond for a lot of us. Its good team bonding, were out here playing as a team, and they actually did a great job with the rink, the ice is awesome.”

No word on the final score, but goaltender Devan Dubnyk played the entire game as a forward, and he was happy to chip in with one goal.
