The Edmonton Oilers have confirmed an earlier report from Sportsnet, that there will be no Young Stars Tournament this September in Penticton, BC. The tournament has become an annual event showcasing the best up-and-coming prospects from various NHL teams, including Edmonton, Vancouver, Calgary and Winnipeg.
In the past two years the tournament has featured Oilers stars Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle, Magnus Paajarvi and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. It was designed by the teams involved to be a more competitive pre-training camp test for their youth. The tournament was held during the second week of September in each of the last two years and was hosted by the Vancouver Canucks.
The cancelation of this tournament follows the NHL shutting down their annual trip to Europe to open the regular season, both decisions related to the labour uncertainty surrounding the league. The Collective Bargaining Agreement between the NHL and NHLPA expires after this season.
