With one of the two runways at the City Centre Airport expected to be closed down next Tuesday, the Edmonton International Airport is spending $20 million to make space available for new tenants.

"That means any tenant, now, can chose between currently available hanger space out here (International Airport), or, if they would prefer, they can custom and purpose build a new hanger," says EIA's Traci Bednard.

The other choice is to re-locate to the recently upgraded airport in Villeneuve.

Meanwhile, Bednard says a GPS system has been installed at City Centre Airport.

This is because closing Runway 16-34 leaves it without an Approach Instrument Landing System. It's what pilots use to safely guide their aircraft to the runway when they can't see it.

But Bednard says GPS will work in a similar fashion and all of the pilots and companies have been warned of the change. (td)
