Banff is exploring the idea of putting a cap on the number of fast food restaurants and souvenir shops.

The idea comes from visitor surveys.

"(The surveys) said they wanted a more authentic experience and to see things and be able to visit things that they don't have at home," says Banff town councillor Chip Olver. "That's part of the reason for this."

Council wants to make a decision before the fall election.

"It's an idea that we've put out for consultation as part of our land use bylaw review," adds Olver. "We're looking at gift shops, fast food restaurants, bed and breakfasts, grocery stores and gas stations, our industrial compound--it's very broad."

Olver says existing businesses would be "grandfathered", and any new rules would only apply to new businesses. (bd,blb)
