Trash Talks Breakthrough

There's been a last minute breakthrough in negotiations to avoid a strike vote by residential trash collectors in Edmonton and area.

Workers employed by Waste Services were set to take a strike vote today (Thursday) but instead they'll vote to accept or reject a tentative contract. The deal was hammered out during negotiations that continued until last night (Wednesday).

Todd Romanow with the Canadian Auto Workers union says they have been offered a "fair" three year contract that reflects the reality of money being made in the garbage industry. In other words, Romanow says the financial package will see improvements but no new or better benefits are in the tentative deal.

Workers will vote at two membership meetings being held in Sherwood Park.
