Even though Edmonton Police are not responsible for protecting former U.S. President George W. Bush while he's in the city for a speech tonight, they will be very visible outside the Shaw Conference Centre.

EPS spokesman Karen Carlson says she can't shed any detail on what officers will be doing and where they'll be - but anyone near the Shaw tonight will see them. "Our officers have been aware of this visit for quite some time. And of course, the usual response to something like this is for the Edmonton Police Service to provide a visible police presense in and around the Shaw Conference Centre."

Carlson says EPS officers will be there for public safety reasons and to control anything that might pose a threat to security. She adds that if anything gets out of hand, the officers are prepared to respond.

The personal safety of former President Bush will be handled by the RCMP and by U.S. Secret Service agents who travel with him. (EM,blb)
