The Kevin Koe rink from Edmonton's Saville Sports Centre has secured a berth in the playoffs at the Tim Horton's Brier in Halifax.
Koe defeated the Northwest Territories/Yukon, skipped by younger brother Jamie from Yellowknife, 8-3 in morning draw action Thursday. The elder Koe scored three in the first end and never looked back, running Alberta's record to 8-2 heading into its final round-robin game. That will be against Ontario's Glenn Howard in the evening draw.
Howard was undefeated heading into final day of round-robin competition. An Alberta win could set up a rematch in the 1-2 page playoff Friday evening.(bp)

The Edmonton Oil Kings gave up three third period goals in a 4-1 loss to the Calgary Hitmen at Rexall Place on Wednesday night, their final home game of the season.
Hitmen forward Ian Schultz gave his team the lead early in the final frame and finished with two points on the night as the visitors earn a seventh straight win and improve to 5-0 against Edmonton, one win away from the season sweep.
Del Cowan opened the scoring at the 8:35 mark of the first period on the power play, but the Oil Kings got on the board early in the second when hometown blueliner Drew Nichol beat Hitmen goalie Martin Jones. With the score tied 1-1, Schultz got the go-ahead goal just 1:16 into the third and Joel Broda netted his 38th of the season on another power play at 9:32. Kevin Koe's hopes for a playoff spot at the Tim Horton's Brier in Halifax took a big leap forward Wednesday.
Koe, from the Saville Sports Centre in Edmonton, skipped his Alberta rink to a 7-6 victory over Quebec in morning draw action Wednesday. The provincial foursome then followed that up with a 6-3 win over New Brunswick.
With the back-to-back wins, Alberta upped its record to 7-2, good for a share of second place with former Olympic gold medal-winner, Brad Gushue and his rink from Newfoundland and Labrador.
Heading into the final day of the round-robin, Alberta plays the Northwest Territories/Yukon, skipped by Kevin's brother Jamie Koe of Yellowknife, and then meets Ontario's Glenn Howard, who enters play Thursday a perfect 9-0.(bp)

A third period meltdown cost the Edmonton Oilers two points in a 4-1 loss to the Ottawa Senators at Rexall Place on Tuesday night.
Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson had a game-high three assists, while Matt Cullen kicked off a three-goal third period with his 14th of the season, a goal that would stand as the game-winner. It's the second time since the Olympic break that the Oil have been tied heading into the third period and have then given up three goals, while being heavily outshot.
In all, the Senators went 2-for-9 with the man advantage, while the Oilers went 0-for-4.
"When you play five-on-four you're going to score once in a while," said goalie Jeff Deslaurier, who made 35 saves on the night, "but if the game is 1-1 and you're playing more on the [penalty kill] then you slash your chance of winning obviously."
Defenseman Tom Gilbert echoed that statement, saying "if you give a team like that, with that amount of skill, that many power plays you know they're going to capitalize on one of them."
"When you're not moving the puck the right way and you're not making plays, it's going to be in your end ...

The Kevin Koe rink from Edmonton's Saville Sports Centre started slowly in 10th draw action at the Tim Horton's Brier in Halifax Tuesday, and never recovered.
The Alberta foursome dropped a 13-8 decision to Nova Scotia in the afternoon draw. After falling behind 5-0 in the first two ends, Koe grabbed two back in the fourth. But, that's when the roof fell in, as Alberta's opponents from the east coast picked up six in the fifth end to build a seemingly insurmountable 11-2 lead.
Koe added two in the sixth, then stole three more in the seventh and another in the eighth to at least make things a bit interesting. But, Alberta shook hands after Nova Scotia scored twice in the ninth, to virtually put the game out of reach.
At 4-2, Koe and company are locked in a three-way tie for the last playoff spot with Quebec and Northern Ontario. Alberta plays 5-1 Manitoba in the evening draw.(bp)

The Oilers will be looking for their third-straight win, when they play host to the Ottawa Senators Tuesday night at Rexall Place (7:30 p.m., 630 CHED).
Edmonton hasn't had a three-game winning streak since early December.
While the Oilers have been playing some good hockey, the Senators are struggling heading into Tuesday's clash. Ottawa is winless since the Olympic break ended.
The Sens still find themselves in the midst of a playoff race in the NHL's Eastern Conference. That is not an option for the Oilers, but head coach Pat Quinn says his team still has a lot to play for.
"That's (playoffs) not a possibility, so they have to really concentrate on their individual development now to continue to become better players both on the physical side, but more importantly, in areas that will help them become a complete player."
Jeff Deslauriers will make his third-straight start in goal for the Oilers. Deslauriers shut-out the New Jersey Devils, Sunday night at Rexall Place.(ks/bp)

Jeff Deslauriers made 22 saves to record his third shutout of the season as the Edmonton Oilers blanked the New Jersey Devils 2-0.
Gilbert Brule and Marc Pouliot scored for the Oilers who won their second game in a row. Pouliot's goal came after Deslauriers stopped Ilya Kovalchuk on a breakaway early in the third, then shortly following that on the same sequence, Robert Nilsson dove to make a pass to Pouliot, who blew a shot past Brodeur for his fourth of the season.
"It's momentum," says Deslauriers. "Defensively you try to give momentum to the player and the player will try to give momentum back by giving you a little breather. But with seven minutes left in the period you still have New Jersey still and you know they're going to come hard no matter what."
Edmonton got on the board 1:23 into the second as Patrick O'Sullivan tracked down a puck behind the Devils net and put in front to Brule. His quick shot banked in off of Brodeur for his 14th goal and 30th point of the season.
Andrew Cogliano says Deslauriers is making a difference. "JD's playing really good I think that's the first reason why ...
