The Portland Winterhawks are WHL champions, winning game six 5-1 over the Edmonton Oil Kings at Rexall Place.
Ty Rattie was the star on Sunday, scoring a hat track, including two shorthanded goals less than three minutes apart in the first period.
“They came out to an early start with a lucky goal, and then we had to kill a double minor, so it was huge to score a couple goals and set the pace to the game. There's no feeling like this, and this is something that I’ll never forget.”
Rattie was named the playoff MVP.
Last year, the Oil Kings beat the Winterhawks in seven games. Head coach Derek Laxdal talks about the difference between the two series.
“I really thought that there backend had alot more poise, alot more speed, and there transitional game was alot tighter.”

MacEwan University is graduating to a higher level of athletics. Starting in the fall of 2014, the school's teams will compete in the Canada West conference in the sports of basketball, volleyball, soccer, and cross country. The addition of the Griffins will boost Canada West's membership to 17 schools. While celebrating MacEwan becoming the 17th member, university president David Atkinson admits it's too many. "A 17-team league is just too big," Atkinson said. "There's going to be a real need to restructure."MacEwan was originally hoping to compete in hockey as well but then withdrew that part of the application. "Our women's hockey program is really well developed and could make the transition into Canada West quite easily," said Atkinson. "That's not the case with our men's hockey program. They have a ways to go. They were quite nervous about joining Canada West. You can't have one team without the other."The Canada West includes the University of Alberta. (jrw)

The newest member of Kevin Martin's rink has a pretty impressive resume.
Three-time world champion David Nedohin will replace John Morris at third. Nedohin also won the Brier four times while playing with Randy Ferbey.
Ferbey and Martin had a heated rivalry years ago, but now Nedohin will join the skip he often battled against.
"Even when there was that element of being arch-rivals, there was still the utmost respect of how good everybody was," said Nedohin.
Martin's rink will compete at the Olympic Trials in Winnipeg in December.
Nedohin originally turned down Martin's offer. His wife, Heather, is also chasing an Olympic berth and he was going to take over increased child care duties. But Nedohin's parents are stepping in to help look after the kids.
"It was a huge, huge load off my mind," said Nedohin. "It was pretty easy for me to make the decision."
"That was a really, really good day," Martin said with a chuckle, describing when Nedohin agreed to come aboard.
Morris left the Martin rink last month. (jrw)
