Keegan Lowe had a goal, two assists and a fight as the Edmonton Oil Kings kicked off a new WHL season with a 5-3 win over the Kootenay Ice on Thursday night
Michael St. Croix added a goal and an assist for the defending league champions, while Brandon Baddock, Henrik Samuelsson and Cole Benson also found the back of the net on banner raising night at Rexall Place. Jonathon Martin, Tanner Muth and Brock Montgomery scored in the losing cause for the Ice.
The Oil Kings got off to a hot start with St. Croix scoring at 1:01 of the first period and Baddock notching his first career WHL goal 1:43 later. The Ice got to within one when Martin beat Laurent Brossoit at 16:23, but Lowe restored the two-goal lead with just over a minute to go. The visitors got to within a goal in the second period, scoring on either side of Henrik Samuelsson's first of the year, but Cole Benson beat Mackenzie Skapski midway through the final frame to round out the scoring.
Brossoit made 25 stops in the win, while Skapski gave up five goals on 33 shots. The Oil Kings host the Red Deer Rebels on Sunday. (jk)
