Captain Canada signs on Canada Day, as the Oilers announce that they have agreed to terms with LW Ryan Smyth on a 2 year contract worth $2.25M per season. The deal does not include a no trade clause.

Smyth was originally drafted by the Oilers in 1994 and played 11 seasons with the club before being deal at the trade deadline in 2007. After stops in New York (Islanders), Colorado and Los Angeles, Smyth returned to Edmonton last summer.

The veteran of 1151 NHL regular season games scored 19 goals and posted 46 points last season with the Oilers.

Tough guy Darcy Hordichuk is also staying put. The Edmonton Oilers gave the 31 year old a one year extension to remain with the team.

He signed as a free agent with the Oilers on July 1st last year and played 43 games with the team, notching 8 fighting majors along the way.

Also today, the team announced that last season's AHL Goaltender of the Year Yann Danis has re-signed with the club on a 1 year deal.
