26 teams expressed interest, but the Oilers came out on top. Coveted defenseman Justin Schultz, who recently decertified from the University of Wisconsin to turn pro, has agreed to terms on a 2 year Entry Level Contract with the Edmonton Oilers.
Schultz, originally drafted by Anaheim in the 2nd round of the 2008 Draft, refused to sign with the Ducks and has been free to talk to other teams since last Sunday. He's a right-handed shooting defenseman with excellent skating ability, a terrific shot and a keen ability to execute crisp breakout passes. Managers and scouts around the NHL widely consider Schultz instantly ready to play Top 4 NHL defenseman minutes and quarterback a 1st unit powerplay.
He was a finalist for the Hobey Baker Trophy as top NCAA player in each of the last 2 seasons, where he picked up 47 points in 41 games and 44 points in 37 games respectively playing for the University of Wisconsin Badgers.
Vancouver, Toronto, Ottawa and the New York Rangers were all finalists in the "sweepstakes", but the Oilers were informed this afternoon that Schultz, a BC native, would sign with them.
