He said it after the  final pre season game on Thursday night, and backed up that statement today when talking about his 46 man roster and cut down day.

Kavis Reed, head coach of the Eskimos said he did not want a quarterback controversy, and avoided one by announcing Steven Jyles will start at quarterback for the Eskimos on Saturday when they play host to Ricky Ray and the Toronto Argos.    “It’s what we felt as a coaching staff was the best opportunity for our football team to be successful on Saturday.”  Said the coach on Jyles , who left Thursdays game early in the 2nd quarter after going 4 for 7 for 53 yards with no interceptions or TDs.

Reed also defended not playing Jyles more than just over one quarter of football in the pre season  “The things we are going to do on Saturday we did in practice, you can’t simulate game situations, but we were very efficient in practice and Steven got more than 70 percent of the reps with the first team offence”  said the second year coach, “We are confident in the game plan we have, we have been working on it since the spring , and there was a reason or a method to the madness as to why we did not play as many snaps with Steven Jyles at quarterback”

Kerry Joseph put up the best numbers as quarterback on Thursday night going 6 or 8 for 133 yards.  Joseph also engineered the Eskimos only offensive touchdown of the pre season that ended with a 39 yard pass play to Hugh Charles, who followed that up with a 6 yard TD run.

The Eskimos also announced that they have signed former Winnipeg Blue Bomber DB/LB Clint Kent and free agent kicker Swayze Waters from the University Alabama-Birmingham.  Both are expected on the practice field tomorrow.
