Zach Phillips scored twice and the defending champion Saint John Sea Dogs defeated the Edmonton Oil Kings 5-2 on tonight to create a four-way tie for the lead at the Mastercard Memorial Cup.

It is the first time all four teams have been tied with 1-1 records since the current format was adopted in 1983.

Jonathan Huberdeau, Danick Gauthier and Ryan Tesink also scored for the Sea Dogs, the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League titleists who were upset by the Ontario Hockey league champion London Knights on Saturday.

Kristians Pless and Stephane Legault replied for Western Hockey League winners Edmonton, which beat the host Shawinigan Cataractes in their first game.

The Oil Kings wrap up round-robin play Tuesday night against London.

The slow, choppy ice that has plagued the tournament during a spring hot spell was evident again in strange bounces and unusual goals. Organizers have called in ice expert Mike Craig to help improve the playing surface for the rest of the event.
