Funeral held for Medicine Hat toddler
1:15am
EDMONTON/630 CHED

About 70 people attended the funeral of a toddler Friday night who died earlier this month in a Medicine Hat day home.

An autopsy found that 18 month old Mercedes Pepper died of blunt force trauma.

The pastor presiding over the service acknowledged that many people have questions about how and why Mercedes died, but he told mourners at Friday's funeral service it was not the place to look for those answers.

Day home operator Erin Jackman, 24, has been charged with manslaughter and failing to provide the necessities of life. Jackman was granted bail this week under conditions that prohibit her from having contact with children under 12 years of age and only allow her supervised visits with her own two children.

Yvonne Fritz, the province's children and youth services minister, has said the day home facility was licensed by the provincial government.(The Canadian Press/rp)
