"Wildrose Alliance believes in democracy," said Smith, at a Friday morning news gathering at City Centre Airport. "I think the fact that we've seen two plebiscites on this issue in the past, both of them clearly endorsing keeping the airport open -- it seems to me that if we're going to make a major change to the use of this airport, that's a decision that has to go back to the people of Edmonton."

Smith went on to say the city hasn't made the case that the airport should close, and she's hoping there'll be a good debate this fall during the municipal election campaign.

In response to Friday's developments, Mayor Stephen Mandel is fuming. Mandel calls it a "disappointing act by the Wildrose Alliance.(sj, bp, ccg)

The Wildrose Alliance has entered the airport debate, throwing its support behind the Envision Edmonton petition campaign. Friday morning they held a news conference where leader Danielle Smith criticized how the city of Edmonton is handling the issue.
You can listen to her comments at the news conference, and the questions she took from reporters.

Mayor Stephen Mandel angrily answered back. You can hear what he had to say as well.
