A Freedom of Information request made by Global News shows the province’s busiest jails: Headingley and the Winnipeg Remand Centre have nearly twice as many inmates as they were designed to hold.
Daniel Tarnowski, a former criminal and recovering drug addict, told Global News he knows first-hand how crowded Manitoba’s prisons can be.
According to the documents from Manitoba’s justice department, nine out of Manitoba’s 11 jails are overcrowded.
While the Headingly facility has a capacity of 486, as of Thursday this week there were 814 inmates..
The union representing correctional officers said the overcrowding is a crisis and it’s going to get worse in October when the federal government’s new tough-on-crime Bill C-10 takes effect.
