Soon it will be mandatory for anyone under 18 in Manitoba to wear a helmet when cycling.
Manitoba Healthy Living Minister Jim Rondeau introduced a bill to that affect this afternoon. Rondeau was asked on CJOB why the legislation wouldn't include adults as well.
He says there will be small fines for those not wearing the helmets but he doesn't anticipate police "chasing people around."
The law would also apply to kids being towed in bike trailers.
Rondeau says other jurisdictions have seen over 80 per cent compliance without having to issue many tickets. He says the bottom line is it's proven bike helmets save lives.
