Closing arguments at Bakema trial today
CJOB News Team reporting
5/17/2012

Closing arguments are underway at the trial of former East St. Paul Police Chief Harry Bakema.

Bakema is charged with perjury and obstruction of justice in connection with the investigation of the 2005 crash that killed Crystal Taman.

Prosecutor Ashley Finlayson has told court he believes off duty cop Derek Harvey Zenk told Bakema he had been drinking when he rear ended Taman because the two knew each other.

Finlayson told court Bakema left that conversation out of his notes and obstructed justice by doing 'virtually no investigating'.

Finlayson said Bakema, "does not pursue the avenues of investigation the comments opened up to him."

Bakema's lawyers have shaken their heads in court at many of the prosecutors points.

Bakema has sat with a hand on his chin, appearing deep in thought.

The defence will make its final submission later today.
