Former East St. Paul Police Chief Harry Bakema broke down in tears at his obstruction of justice trial Tuesday morning. Bakema is alleged to have willingly tampered with the investigation into the 2005 death of Crystal Taman to cover up for an off cuty police officer. That officer, Derek Harvey Zenk was returning home from a drinking party when he rear ended Taman on the Perimeter. Global News reports Bakema broke down when hearing testimony from Ken Graham. Graham was a fellow officer at the time who told court Bakema had "gone downhill big time." Graham's work on the case has also come into question. He was thrown out of a 2008 inquiry into Taman's death after allegedly trying to intimidate a witness.
