First Nation Women in Manitoba will be walking Friday afternoon at the Legislature as the Defenders of Mother Earth to protest against the Enbridge Gateway Pipeline and the Northern Alberta Tar Sands.
They also want to show solidarity for the Yinka Dene Alliance who are travelling by train across Canada to raise support for their struggle against the Pipeline project. Organizers of the March are urging People from all cultures to band together to defend against attacks on their lands and resources. They claim the Tar Sands threatens the culture and livelihoods of The Dene, Cree and Metis communities in Treaty 8 and Treaty 11 Territories in Northern Alberta. And, Aboriginal people living in the oil sands region face potential health impacts and environmental impacts because of oil sands development.
They add the government of Canada has a responsibility to recognize Indigenous peoples’ rights to determine whether any pipeline can traverse their lands... The land is sacred and they want it protected for their children, grandchildren and children yet to be born.
