DELTA/CKNW (AM980)
Ahmadiyya Muslims are gathering today for the inauguration of their largest mosque in BC.
The Baitur Rahman Mosque in Delta is now the largest Ahmadiyya Mosque in BC.
Lal Khan Malik, from Toronto, is the national president of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community.
He says their branch makes up only 1% of the entire Muslim religion. Malik says the main difference between his denomination and other Muslim denominations is that his denounces the use of force under all circumstances.
That's why he says it is upsetting when a terrorist actis carried out by a Muslim extremist and all Muslims are blamed.
"When something happens for which all Muslims are held responsible for, it is the most difficult thing we have to handle. Members of the public feel that all Muslims are like the ones they have seen on the media doing things against humanity. It is frustrating because we stand for peace and we promote peace."
Malik says there are about 2000 Ahmadiyya Muslims in BC and about 30,000 in Canada.

VANCOUVER/CKNW (AM980)
The May long weekend marks the unofficial kick-off to recreational boating season in BC.
And to help keep the waters safe, today is also the start of National Safe Boating Awareness Week.
Over a hundred people turned up on a rainy afternoon at the Vanier Park boat ramp to hear the latest on boat safety.
Sergeant Norm Webster was there with the Vancouver Police Marine Unit.
He says the number one thing they are concerned with is drinking and boating.
"The same rules apply on water as they do on land. We're here to make sure people go out and have an enjoyable May long weekend, but that they actually get back safely after the weekend."
Webster did not think the closure of the Kits Coast Guard base will affect people's safety this season.
He was confident they will provide the same safety as they have in the past, with the help of the recreational boater.
Webster says they have a coalition that will patrol the area which includes: the North Van and Coquitlam RCMP, the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue, Canadian Coast Guard, and the Canadian Safe Boating Council.

A former Delta resident has finally been sentenced for sexually assaulting three children in the 1960s and 70s.
Jamieson Glendinning has been handed a prison sentence of more than three years but he gets six months credit for time already served.
The 63 year old was arrested in March 2010, but took off to Australia after getting bail.
He was re-arrested at Vancouver Airport last November, and in January pleaded guilty to three counts of indecent assault.
Glendinning's victims were between the ages of 7 and 16 at the time of the assaults, which he committed over a 10 year period, ending in 1979.
Glendinning was also involved with the Tsawwassen Amateur Baseball Association from 1985 to 1995.
As part of his sentence, he must provide a DNA sample and his name will be listed on the National Sex Offender Registry.

The Victoria Day long weekend is upon us, and if you're going to be near streams or rivers, be careful.
The BC Coroners' service says they're running much faster and higher than normal right now.
They say there have already been 3 deaths this spring: a young woman fell into swift current creek near Valemount, and two young men were swept away at Golden Ears Provincial Park.
The body of one of the men was recovered Wednesday -- his friend was taken out of the river five days before.
The Coroners' Service warns that just six inches of water can sweep a person downstream if it is running quickly. They add that although a bank of a fast running creek might look stable, it can often be eroded, and can collapse with someone standing on it.
The Coroners Service says there were 397 accidental drowning deaths in BC between 2008 and 2012.

Port Coquitlam/CKNW (AM980)
The Mayor of Port Coquitlam says Canada doesn't have enough provisions to fight bullying.
This after the RCMP said it wouldn't enforce an anti-bullying bylaw. The force insists the Criminal Code of Canada includes enough provisions to deal with bullying and says the bylaw would infringe upon the code.
Mayor Greg Moore says there have been very few cases of someone being convicted under the Criminal Code for bullying.
"And that's because the Criminal Code is such a high bar to pass. It's really around harassment, it's around physical abuse, it's around racism, those sort of things, but the bar's just way too high, the investigation process is way too high."
Moore says the city was trying to lower that bar, with the idea of a bylaw. But most of all, he says they wanted to get bullies into a program for help.
Last December, City Council asked staff to look into a possible bylaw, after the suicide of 15 year old Amanda Todd a couple of months earlier.
Amanda's mother, Carol Todd says it's disappointing that the bylaw won't go ahead in Port Coquitlam, but says she understands the problems with it.
"And it ...

You can scratch at least of the names tossed around to replace NDP Leader Adrian Dix if he decides to step down after Tuesday’s devastating loss at the polls.
Among the candidates rumoured to be in the mix to take over is Vision Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson.
However, when asked about it, Robertson was quick to close the door: "No, no, I am happy where I am."
Robertson used to represent Vancouver-Fairview for the NDP before he stepped down to run for mayor.
Dix has promised to formally respond to the election loss soon, and when he goes, might shed some light on whether he plans to stay on as leader.
