BURNABY/CKNW(AM980)
Residents of a Burnaby Mountain townhome complex (Hillside Place Housing complex) on Forest Grove Drive, are breathing a sigh of relief after a brush fire that crept up the hill towards them was knocked down and contained.
Residents are back inside their homes after being put on short evacuation notice and waiting out in the street.
However, some may not be as happy as others as police believe those persons that caused the fire may live there, "The neighbours are telling us that there were kids that may have been playing in the woods with fire."
RCMP Inspector Al Ramey says the kids will receive a stern talking to, but will there be charges, "We don't think so 'cause it sounds like the kids are under 12 years old."
The Forest Service sent in helicopters to help battle the one hectare blaze.

Canada's Public Safety Minister says he's still waiting for a final tally on security costs linked to the 2010 Olympics.
Vic Toews says he doesn't think the total 900-million dollar budget was exhausted, "I don't believe that it's in any way over the original estimate. I haven't heard anything to the contrary."
The head of the 2010 Integrated Security Unit, RCMP Assistant Commissioner Bud Mercer, has said he plans to release final numbers before September, but his last estimates showed the budget was 33-million dollars in the black.

If the BC Government cancels its contract with the RCMP when it expires in 2012, the Federal Government would save a lot of money, but Public Safety Minister Vic Toews says the Mounties are the envy of other countries, "Because they have a national police force that only deals on the national level. It's very difficult for them to make good strong relations with community members. In Canada, those RCMP officers are involved at the ground level. I wouldn't want to see that disappear."
BC's Solicitor General Mike de Jong has indicated he has no plans to replace the RCMP with a provincial police force, but earlier this year, his Ministry was briefed on how much that would cost.
The RCMP's current contract with BC is funded 30 per cent by Ottawa and 70 per cent by the Province.

When the Vancouver Whitecaps unveiled their new jerseys for the 2011 season in early June they were embraced by fans. But not everyone was happy with the jerseys. Umbro, the teams current jersey sponsor has filed a lawsuit.
The Suit filed in BC Supreme Court alleges that Umbro has exclusive rights to use the Vancouver Whitecaps name and logo until October 31, 2010. It claims the Whitecaps broke the agreement when new Adidas Whitecaps merchandise began being sold at games, online, and even at a Sears store.
The Suit claims the Whitecaps were warned of the contract breaches and yet they continued.
Umbro claims their reputation was damaged and is asking for an injunction to stop the sales of Whitecaps Adidas merchandise and for any profits the team has made from those sales.

Almost two weeks after he was asked to help bring convicted war criminal Michael Seifert back to Vancouver, Canada's Public Safety Minister says he hasn't seen that request, "Nothing has come across my desk in that respect."
Vic Toews says the 86-year old man, now serving a life sentence in an Italian military prison, lost his Canadian citizenship, but he still deserves to be treated fairly, "Canada expects civilized nations, indeed all nations, to treat prisoners in accordance with certain basic international rules of law."
Seifert's lawyer, who claims his client is living under horrible conditions in Italy, is trying to have him repatriated to a prison in Vancouver where he can spend his final days close to his wife and son.

RICHMOND/CKNW(AM980)
The same day new funding was made available to prevent hate-motivated crimes in Metro Vancouver, Richmond RCMP are reporting the arrest of a suspect after racist graffiti was found at a local shopping centre. The 18-year old was picked up Wednesday outside the Empire Centre.
Public Safety Minister Vic Toews, who's in Vancouver to announce funding aimed at preventing hate crimes, says he finds the graffiti disturbing, "I am concerned about it. These are things that we take very seriously given the composition of our communities here in Canada."
Toews has given two Jewish facilities more than 20 thousand dollars to make security improvements including new alarm systems.

BC's Minister of Children and Families has scrapped a controversial program testing the sexual responses of young sex offenders.
Mary Polak says the decision was made this morning after she learned one of the people involved in the program is under police investigation.
She says an individual who was contracted to work in that particular facility has since been charged with sex offences alledged to have occured outside work.
She also says she's obtained information with respect to the ongoing practice that essentially hasn't lived up to the kind of claims that have been made about it.
Polak says she's been advised there are better ways of treating young sex offenders that would ensure their rights are not violated.
Yesterday, the province's director of Youth Forensic Psychiatric Services was predicting this program would resume after it had been reviewed by BC's Child and Youth Representative.
The program involved boys as young as 13 having sensors attached to their genitals while viewing sexual images.

It could take a week or ten days before BC's troubled online gambling site is restored.
Housing and Social Development Minister Rich Coleman says the website is being tested for volume and appears to be standing up well.
Playnow-dot-com needs to undergo a third party review to get the okay from the Information and Privacy Commissioner.
Coleman says that should happen soon, perhaps in a week to ten days.
Earlier this month, the website was shut down because of privacy breaches, allowing some players to gamble with other people's money.

Four Greenpeace activists have been arrested after they occupied Enbridge's downtown Vancouver offices.
Protesters are also camped outside the pipeline giant's office at West Pender and Burrard.
Stephanie Goodwin is one of them, and she says police stormed the office building around one in the morning to arrest the four people inside.
She claims there were plenty of police on hand for four non-violent protestors.
The protesters are demanding Enbridge withdraw it's proposed Northern Gateway pipeline project which would bring crude from Alberta to Kitimat before it's loaded onto asia-bound tankers.
Three days ago, an Enbridge Pipeline burst in Michigan, spilling millions of litres of crude oil and triggering a state of emergency.
