55 lives saved so far this year.
Staff at the Kitsilano Coast Guard base are launching a public appeal aimed at keeping that station alive.
They claim to have saved nine lives alone over the long weekend.
A strong municipal-political contingent, joined both base personell and union staff in a public call on the Harper government to reverse its decision to close the base.
Vancouver city councillor Kerry Jang:
"As my son said to be over the weekend: let's put the Prime Minister and his cabinet out adrift in the harbour for 30 minutes, and see how they like it"
A motion will also come before vancouver city council next week on the matter.
Coast Guard service will come from Richmond's Sea Island starting this fall.
