A 70-year-old woman is dead, following a tragic accident on Hornby Island.

The woman was part of a group walking in Helliwell Provincial Park Saturday afternoon.

Comox Valley RCMP Const. Chris McMillan says she was too close to an edge and she somehow lost her balance, falling more than 60 feet over a rocky cliff.

"Hornby Island Fire repelled down, the Canadian Coast Guard's fast response vessel from French Creek arrived on scene with their medics, the air ambulance. And all efforts were co-ordinated in an attempt to save her, but unfortunately she did succumb to her injuries."

Reports suggest the woman was a tourist on the island.
