Councillor Wants Old North York City Hall Turned Into University
Toronto/Am640 News

5/18/2012

City Councillor James Pasternak has introduced a motion to see the old North York city hall, on Yonge St. turned into a new university campus.

Pasternak would like to see a working group explore the idea before it goes to the city’s economic development committee Tuesday.

He says the knowledge economy is a major driver to the city’s economic future.

The Mel Lastman square complex is a horseshoe of buildings wrapped around a sunken square with a fountain and small river.

The Toronto Centre for the Arts is across the street and is closing down because it's losing $1 million a year and, because Dancap Productions is pulling out.

The Ontario government currently has a moratorium on any new campuses or satellite campuses being built.
