New Tax Coming to Hydro Bills
Ontario electricity customers will soon be hit with an additional tax to cover $53 million of the Liberal government's new conservation and green energy program. A report from the Toronto Star says the levy will appear on hydro bills. A government document stipulates the assessment be issued by April 15 and the money paid by July 30. It could mean a $4 annual increase to customers in bills over the course of a year. Energy and Infrastructure Minister Brad Duguid says the money would pay for home energy audits and a program that helps industrial and commercial firms switch to solar power. Progressive Conservative Leader Tim Hudak is calling it a ``sneaky tax grab.''

GO Transit Fare Increase
GO Transit will officially increase its fares today, no matter where you get on the bus or train.   The increase of 25 cents will affect all routes, regardless of the distance travelled, and will be used to cover existing operating costs and provide improved services needed for a growing ridership. 10 and 40 ride tickets will see discounts of 7.5% and 17.5% respectively, with March monthly passes valid until the end of the month.

UPDATE: Fatal Stabbing Near York University
Police have identified the victim of an early morning stabbing outside of a club in Vaughan. Roger Samaroo, 26, of Toronto died after he was stabbed during an altercation in the parking lot outside the Coconut Lounge on Steeles Avenue West on Saturday. Police say they responded to a weapons call shortly after 3:30 a.m. and found three individuals who had been stabbed. The victims were taken to Toronto-area hospitals, where one died of his injuries. Two other individuals from Toronto, a 26-year-old and 22-year-old, suffered non-life threatening injuries and have been released from hospital. Police in York Region are investigating and are asking anyone with information to come forward.

Coach Bus Driver Charged With Impaired Driving
Officers with the OPP Highway Safety Division are investigating an incident of impaired driving involving a coach bus with passengers aboard. 34 students from a Michigan university were travelling to Toronto, when they realized the driver was making erratic moves and not paying full attention to the road. Some called police, and around 10:00 pm were able to get the driver to pull to the side of the road, where officers charged him with Impaired Driving by Dugs. The 47 year old man from Northville Michigan will be in a Brampton court today.

Fraud Prevention
March is also known as national fraud prevention month across the country, and in partnership with the government of canada and the competition bureau, Shred-It has teamed up to help residents across the country stay safe.   The Fraud Prevention Forum is a mixed group of agencies whose main goal is protecting Canadians, and prevent people from becoming victims of fraud, using the slogan "Recognize it. Report it. Stop it." A numnber of locations have been set up for people to drop off things that may leak personal information is discarded improperly, and be found by clicking here.

Fatal Hit and Run on QEW
A woman is dead after she was hit by a vehicle in the east bound QEW lanes at Dorval Drive. OPP say it happened just before 9:00 pm and that the vehicle left the scene and there may be a second involved. The victim's age and identity has not been released. Police say they are still trying to determine how she ended up on the busy expressway. The stretch reopened around 2:00 am.

Another Deadly Avalanche in B.C.
One person has been killed and another injured in an avalanche west of Revelstoke, B.C. Police are trying to determine the size of the overall number of people involved in the slide at Eagle Pass, between Sicamous and Revelstoke. Rescue teams have been sent into the area including helicopters and dogs. The slide hit a group of snowmobilers. It came a week after another slide near Revelstoke killed two Alberta man and injured 31 other people.

New Weather Record in Toronto
The day before Spring officially starts, Toronto is basking in amazing weather. Friday's 18C set a new record for the warmest March 19 at Pearson airport since records started in 1938. The old record was 14.2C set back in 1986. The previous three days in the city fell just short of beating records as well. However, Environment Canada is expecting this to see more seasonable temperatures next week.

Atlantic Packaging is closing its plant in Whitby, blaming a decline in newsprint demand, the rising Canadian dollar and increased cost of raw materials.   The plant closure will affect 151 employees.

CN Workers Awarded Raise Increase

A federal arbitrator has awarded a raise for CN Rail workers who participated in a five day strike last year.   1,700 employees will get a 6.8 wage increase over a period of three years, along with improvements to the current dental plan. A strike by the engineers was settled Dec. 2 after the railway agreed to roll back an imposed wage increase and monthly mileage cap increases.   The agreement was reached just ahead of federal legislation that would have forced the engineers back to work.
