A Calgary judge has granted an application from the crown to have a psychiatric assessment performed on Louis Bear. The crown is hoping to tag notorious bad driver Louis Bear with long term offender status. That would keep him under tight supervision for up to ten years after he's released from prison. The man has a chequered past with numerous convictions including running over and killing two men outside the Whiskey nightclub in 2007. His latest conviction over an incident where he was driving erratically in a stolen car and when cornered by police, accelerated and drove towards them, at which point, they shot him. Bear was acquitted of the more serious charge of attempted murder which the defence feels got him off facing a possible dangerous offender hearing.
