As of today, Calgary builders will have to submit site safety plans as part of the process to receive a building permit on projects that are five storeys or higher. City officials say the plans are intended to ensure the public is protected around construction sites at all times. In 2009, the city identified a need for better protection at building sites after some loose construction material fell off a high-rise building downtown, resulting in the fatality of a three-year old girl (Michelle Krsek). City officials say, as this is a pilot project, the site safety plans will not be reviewed, however they will be required prior to the release of a building permit.
