Civil engineers at the Schulich School of Engineering at the U of C are looking at whether remote sensing technology can improve safety on construction sites. Graduate student Reza Maalek is hoping the tracking project will get him a masters degree in the fall, the construction industry is hoping it can lead to safer worksites. Maalek and his professor are are using tracking tags that use Ultra Wide Band signals to monitor the movements of people, materials and machinery in real time. The tags send a signal to receivers and trigger an alarm when they're in a danger zone. He says defining the size of the buffer zone is an important piece. The research work is being funded by several construction companies and the Calgary construction Association.
