Businesses upset over leaky downtown alley
Hamilton Spectator
8/16/2012

The city of Hamilton could be taken to task over a deteriorating and leaking city-owned alleyway.

Two downtown businesses have reported thousands of dollars of damage to their property because of it.

The Sirloin Cellar and Kohler’s Pharmacy, on James Street near King, want the city to pick up the tab for the repairs, and they say they’re willing to take their fight to court.

The lawyer representing the businesses told council that there are a host of safety concerns including rusting alleyway supports and a rusting gas line. Water has repeatedly poured into the Sirloin Cellar’s mechanical room and kitchen.

The city isn't commenting as they receive legal advice about the issue.  In the past, the city has had very limited maintenance responsibility for the 98 kilometres of alleyways in Hamilton.
